About

The Fresno Chili was developed by my dads brother and released for commercial cultivation by Clarence B. Hamlin in 1952. Hamlin named the chili "Fresno" in honor of Fresno, California. They are grown throughout California, specifically the San Joaquin Valley.  Up until now not much has been done to develop or promote the Fresno Chili and to me that was quite sad, from the time I was a small child I have been around them and have grown them and sold them to others here in the Fresno and also from my small Rancho in and around San Felipe, Baja, California, Mexico.
History     See photos at the bottom of the page...
As a member of the founding family no one in my family except myself cares a thing about growing anything, much less The Famous Fresno Chili. When my dad died a few years ago, I was going through all his paper work I found his brother Clarence had given him the rights to the Fresno Chili, before he passed, I had forgotten about that up until recently.  Then I got to thinking this was now passed on to me per the wishes of my uncle Clearance to the only nephew that took an interest in his work, and has been growing them for years an also has copies of the Original Heirloom seeds it was a no brainier, it just fell in to my lap.  I will be going out and promoting this great chili my Uncle Clarence developed for all of us to enjoy.  I have old black an white photos from 1952 of some of the original plants from fields where our family grew them here in Fresno, I would love to share them with all who view this web site...  Have a super Day !!!  By Casey Hamlin

Fresno peppers are similar in shape and heat to jalapeño peppers (5-700 SHU) and are grown extensively in California, Texas and New Mexico.
This cold tolerant plant grow approximately 2-2.5 ft tall by 20 inches wide and are prolific beaers of upright arrow shaped 2-3 inch long by 1in wide
peppers which mature from bright green to orange to a beautiful deep red . The peppers have a slight sweetness about them and are fantastic
when used fresh for salsas. Also known as Chile Carbide or Chile Cera.

FRESNO SUPREME

Fresno Supreme is said to produce better quality, more uniform darker green fruits and slightly more pointed in shape compared to a normal Fresno
This variety is resistant to TMV. 4000-6000 SHU

Question: I often see Fresno chili peppers called for in recipes. Who developed the variety?

— Brad Fischer, Fresno

Answer:

Clarence Brown Hamlin, who had a farm near Clovis, developed the Fresno chili in 1952 and named it after his home county.

Hamlin, who went by "Brownie," owned the Clarence Brown Seed Co. Hamlin's self-taught experiments with plant varieties resulted in the Fresno variety, said his nephew, Casey Hamlin of Fresno County.

"He was looking for a different flavor" when he created the Fresno chili by accident, said Hamlin, who grows and markets Fresno chili peppers from original heirloom seeds. Hamlin said his uncle died in the late 1950s.

The Fresno chili is similar to a jalapeño pepper but has thinner walls, making it best suited for cooking. The chili is green in the summer and turns red as it matures in the fall.

One idea for a healthy life is, Eat healthy, drink a lot of good clean water, 5 oz of red wine at night & 30 min. of good exercise each day... A good attitude goes a long way, be happy Laugh a bunch...  Have a Super DAY !!!
